"The Chess system provides 100 percent stock control accuracy in the warehouse and means we have complete product stock history and traceability. This is very important in the food industry. We are pleased with the Chess system in the cold store and are aware of its potential uses in other parts of our business."
Cherry Valley is the UK's largest duck processor. Their finished goods cold store in Casitor, Lincolnshire was originally commissioned in June 1988 and stores up to 3,300 pallets.
The Chess Warehouse Management System was selected for its proven ability as part of a programme to upgrade the cold store and improve stock accuracy and product traceability. Implemented in 1998, it controls the handling and distribution of a range of frozen duck products to the retail sector.
Pallets arrive from production after blast freezing, and are received by the Chess system, which selects putaway locations and issues RF based instruction. Chess updates the main business system so that delivery documentation can be processed for pallets destined for external storage.
Full pallet movement instructions are controlled via RF but, for simplicity, picking is done using system generated picking lists. Stock taking time has been reduced by 80%, and is now done by just one member of staff.
