The Ice Co Storage and Logistics, sister company to Europe’s largest manufacturer of ice, The Ice Co, has recently consolidated its network of depots into a single real-time environment using the Empirica WMS (warehouse management system) from Chess Logistics Technology.
With three depots in South Kirby, Preston and Fleetwood, previously The Ice Co Storage & Logistics ran Empirica WMS on separate servers. The new implementation sees the company’s warehouse management function come together under one system and as a result of expansion a further depot at Wallsend, near Newcastle has now been integrated. In addition, a further depot located in Glasgow will shortly be brought into the centralised WMS operation.
The company offers specialist temperature controlled storage and distribution services to third parties from its sites across the UK. With over 51,000 pallet spaces and a number of bespoke services including order picking, blast freezing, cross docking and tempering in its 24 hour seven days a week operation.
The Ice Co Storage & Logistics will now benefit from enhanced functions including inventory management and stock traceability plus a centralised management and reporting function to improve efficiencies, productivity and pick accuracy.
Empirica WMS is also being used to provide support for multiple production lines for The Ice Co’s ice production, including cubes, super cubes and crushed. As pallets are moved down the conveyor, a scan is made to identify the product and Empirica WMS then generates a pallet number and label information, including quantity and best before data. A label is then produced and attached to each pallet with a receipt advice generated by Empirica WMS, which is used to create the putaway instructions.
In addition to consolidating its operations, the company has also implemented Empirica’s online interface including a new web-order system that significantly improves the placement and management of orders from its customers. The web-order system allows The Ice Co Storage and Logistics third party customers to place orders directly onto the Empirica WMS and control when they are released for distribution. In addition, customers can access the web interface to view stock levels and produce detailed reports.
